Jakarta (13/1) Director of BAZNAS Center of Strategic Studies (PUSKAS BAZNAS) Irfan Syauqi Beik explained the history of zakat development in Indonesia to Chairman of Zakat and Endowment Commission of Sokoto State, Nigeria, Mohammed Lawal Maidoki.

Irfan describes, the current zakat management in Indonesia is subject to the Act no.23/2011 which was issued in the reign of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The Act is an amendment of the previous zakat Act which was issued in 1999 during the reign of President BJ Habibie.

 

In addition, Maidoki also describes zakat-related management in Sokoto, Nigeria. He explains that Nigeria does not have laws that centralizes zakat, but regulated independently by the state, which has a majority of Muslim population.

Maidoki said, as a region with one hundred percent Muslims, Sokoto State has recently passed laws that gives full authority to his institutions to implement zakat and waqf affairs in Sokoto, Nigeria.
