Strengthening governance and operational management is important for Indonesia's zakat institutions (LPZs). Increasing transparency and accountability in the management and distribution of zakat will increase public trust in zakat institutions. However, the measurement of the Zakat Core Principles Implementation Index and the Zakat Management Institution Health Index conducted by BAZNAS in collaboration with DEKS Bank Indonesia (2022) showed that aspects of governance and operational management became aspects that had lower scores than other aspects.
In response to this result, on Tuesday (01/11/2022), BAZNAS RI and DEKS Bank Indonesia held a governance and zakat operational management workshop for eight (8) zakat institutions, both Badan Amil Zakat (BAZ) and also Lembaga Amil Zakat (LAZ). These several zakat institutions were invited to the workshop, including BAZNAS of West Sumatra Province, BAZNAS of Banten Province, BAZNAS of West Java Province, BAZNAS of Central Java Province, BAZNAS of West Nusa Tenggara Province, LAZ Al-Azhar, LAZ Baitul Mal Muamalat, and LAZ Nurul Hayat.
The workshop began with remarks by BAZNAS RI leader in the field of Research and Development, Prof. (HC) Dr Zainulbahar Noor, and the Executive Director of DEKS Bank Indonesia, Mr Prijono, who share their respect for this workshop for the sake of better zakat management in Indonesia. And then continued with the socialization of the Zakat Core Principles Implementation Index and the Zakat Management Institution Health Index by Feri Noor as Deputy Director of DEKS BI and also the presentation of the result of those indexes by Dr M Hasbi Zaenal, Director of DKPN BAZNAS RI.
The core of this workshop consisted of 3 sessions, the first session on strengthening zakat governance, the second session on the effectiveness of operational zakat management, and the last session on zakat management. The workshop went smoothly, and all zakat institution representatives enthusiastically responded to all the workshop sessions.
